How to get to the Hamptons from New York City?

There are many options for traveling to the Hampton from New York City and the time needed to get out here can vary depending upon traffic. For most visitors, there are three main options: The Long Island Railroad, the Jitney (Bus), and driving a car.

For those who want to get to the Hamptons fastest way possible, there is the Blade flight option—which operate small aircraft and helicopters.

Here are some more details about each option.

1)    The Long Island Railroad (LIRR):

The most reliable in terms of time of travel is the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) which takes about 2 hours 30 minutes and stops at Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Amagansett, and Montauk.

During the summer months, there are about nine trains per day that leave from Penn Station in Manhattan starting at 12:04 a.m. with the last train leaving at 9:23 p.m.  Most trains leave in the morning or late afternoon/early evening.

The cost of the train is $22.25 off-peak and $30.50 peak (each way).

For those arriving at JFK Airport, visitors can take the AirTrain from the JFK terminals to Jamaica station.  From Jamaica station, the LIRR provides service to the Hamptons.

Please consult the LIRR website for schedules and more detail:

2)    The Hamptons Jitney/Ambassador bus services:

Some visitors to the Hamptons prefer taking the Jitney/Ambassador bus service.  The advantage of this service is that the bus stops in multiple locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens so riders do not need to get to Penn Station to start their trip.

The buses are comfortable and stop at all major towns in the Hamptons. You can even reserve a specific seat on the Ambassador line.  Although more expensive, the Ambassador bus service is more comfortable as it only has 3 seats across for each row on the bus.

For visitors who want to take the Jitney service from LaGuardia or JFK Airport need to take a taxi/Uber to the “Queens Airport Connection stop” in Fresh Meadows, Queens. This stop is located at the corner of 190th Street and the Eastbound Service Road of the L.I.E. (Take L.I.E. to Exit 25 eastbound, follow the service road to 190-02 Horace Harding Blvd, in front of the AMC Loews Fresh Meadows 7).

3)    Driving to the Hamptons:

Driving to the Hamptons from New York City can take anywhere from two to six hours depending upon the traffic.  There are two main roads leading to the Hamptons from New York: The Long Island Expressway (LIE) also called I-495 and the Southern State Parkway to the NY-27.  The LIE has high-occupancy vehicle lanes which can help speed up the trip for those traveling in a group but often has worse traffic.

For visitors renting a car from JFK, we recommend taking the Southern State Parkway to NY-27 to get to the Hamptons.

None of the highways on Long Island require tolls.

4)    Blade air service to the Hamptons:

The fastest way to get to the Hamptons from Manhattan is to take the Blade service which operate helicopters, seaplanes or small aircraft. The air service leaves from West 30th St, East 23rd St in Manhattan, and Teterboro airport in New Jersey.  Most of the aircraft fly into East Hampton but there are also flights to Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, and Montauk.

The cost of the flight is about $1025 each way depending upon the destination and the type of aircraft used.
